What are the advantages of being a member of a credit union? rather than a regular bank?

CU you are a “member” Bank you are a “customer”
Tends to be reflected in how they handle you.
Cannot speak to all markets, but in Phoenix, Desert Schools Federal Credit Union can’t be beaten for loan rates, free checking, bunches of other services. Not always the best on savings account rates. I’ve been a member since 1983, and would not swap it for any bank.
